Swim Meet Explainer
Time Trials
This Villa only event is the swimmers’ first chance to race for time. It is held on Saturday, starting at 9am and ending no later than noon.
Times are not official NVSL times.
Events: Free, back, breast and fly.
Rules for Participating:
- All swimmers are encouraged to swim as many strokes they can legally swim.
A Meet
Competitive dual meets - A Meets - are held on Saturdays, starting at 9am and ending no later than noon.
Times in the competitive meets are official NVSL times.
Events: In addition to individual stroke events, relays are conducted for each age group, plus a mixed age relay.
Rules for Participating:
- Swimmers may swim up to 2 strokes and 2 relays.
- Coaches select swimmers the Thursday before each A Meet based on times.
B Meet
Developmental dual meets - B Meets - are held on Mondays, starting at 6:00pm and may go as late as 9:00pm.
Times in the developmental meets are not official NVSL times. The meets are refereed, however, because they are designed to provide competitive conditions for those swimmers who do not have the opportunity to swim or be successful in NVSL meets.
Events: In addition to the individual stroke events, there is an Individual Medley (IM) event, which is one length of the pool in each of the four strokes. There are no relays in dual B meets. There is no limit to the number of children allowed to swim, and there can be several heats for each event.
Rules for Participating:
- Swimmers who did NOT swim in the previous A Meet: up to 2 strokes + IM
- Swimmers who DID swim in the previous A Meet: up to 2 strokes (different from strokes they swam in the A Meet) + IM
- No swimmer may swim more than 2 strokes plus IM.
- Younger/newer swimmers should get coach approval prior to swimming breaststroke, butterfly or IM.
Divisional Relay Carnival (A Meet)
All 6 division teams compete. The meet is held on Wednesday afternoon, starting at 6pm and ending approximately 9pm.
Times in the competitive meets are official NVSL times.
Events: Free relay (all age groups); medley relay (all age groups); mixed age relay.
Rules for Participating:
- Swimmers may swim up to 3 relays.
- Coaches select swimmers to compete.
All Star Relay Carnival (A Meet)
All 17 divisions send relay teams to a relay “playoff” meet. The meet is held on Wednesday morning, starting at 9am and may go to mid afternoon or when the meet is over.
Times in the competitive meets are official NVSL times.
Events: Free relay (all age groups); medley relay (all age groups); mixed age relay.
Rules for Participating:
- Swimmers may swim up to 3 relays.
- For each race, the top 18 relay teams in the league are selected to swim based on Divisional Relay Carnival times. Typically a few relay teams from each team make All Stars.
B Meet Relay Carnival
Friendly meet with 2 - 3 teams. The meet is typically held on a Thursday evening, starting at 6pm and ending approximately 9pm.
Times are not official NVSL times.
Events: Free relay (all age groups); medley relay (all age groups); fun relays.
Rules for Participating:
- Swimmers may swim up to 3 relays.
- Preference given to B Meet swimmers, but A Meet swimmers may be asked to swim to support their teammates.
IM Carnival
Friendly meet with 2 - 3 FDL teams. Held on the last Monday of the season, starting at 6:00pm and may go as late as 9:00pm.
Times in the developmental meets are not official NVSL times.
Events: IM only
Rules for Participating:
- Any swimmer who can complete IM legally may swim.
Divisionals (A Meet)
All 6 division teams compete in for the final competitive meet of the season. The meet is held on Saturday, starting at 9am and mid afternoon or when the meet is over.
Times in the competitive meets are official NVSL times.
Events: Free, back, breast, fly and IM.
Rules for Participating:
- Swimmers may swim up to 2 strokes.
- Coaches select swimmers to compete.
Individual All Stars (A Meet)
All 17 divisions send swimmers to a final “playoff” meet. The meet is held on Saturday, starting at 9am and mid afternoon or when the meet is over.
Times in the competitive meets are official NVSL times.
Events: Free, back, breast, fly and IM.
Rules for Participating:
- Swimmers may swim up to 2 strokes.
- For each race, the top 18 swimmers in the league are selected to swim based on Divisionals times. Typically a few swimmers from each team make All Stars.
