Minimum Volunteer Requirements
These jobs fulfill mandatory volunteer requirements to be a part of the swim team.
Officials, NVSL certification/training required:
- REFEREE: (1 per home meet): In charge of the meet once it is under way and is responsible for all decisions regarding rules.
- STARTER: (1 per home meet): Responsible for announcing to the swimmers which event they are about to swim, getting them into position and ensuring everyone gets a fair start.
- STROKE and TURN JUDGES: (2 from each team, total of 4): Responsible for assessing the correctness of strokes and turns and issuing DQ slips if a swimmer does not meet the requirements of the stroke.
Meet Operations Support: No certification required but some optional training available in some cases:
- HEAD TIMER: (from home team) and ASSISTANT HEAD TIMER (from visiting team): Collect time cards and verify that the middle time has been recorded correctly. Responsible for extra watches and helping timers in all lanes when needed.
- TIMERS (9 from each team, minimum 18): 3 timers are assigned to each lane; their goal is to achieve the most accurate times possible.
- DATA COORDINATOR: Responsible for logging swimmer times and coordinating with opposing team. Optional NVSL training available.
- ANNOUNCER: (1 per home meet): Announces all events as they are about to occur and the winners of all events.
- TABLE WORKERS/ AWARDS CLERK: (scoring verifiers, time recorders, and awards clerks) (3 from each team, total of 6): Receive cards with the swimmers’ times, check for accuracy, put cards in order of placement, place labels on individual ribbons. There is also a clinic provided by the NVSL to help with table efficiency.
- CLERK OF COURSE: Organize swimmers into the lanes and the order in which they are to swim as they arrive in the clerk of course area. A clerk leads the younger swimmers to their lane assignments on deck.
- MARSHALL (1 from each team): Responsible for overseeing safe warm-ups and maintaining order in the swimming venue. Marshalls, in particular, ensure that no one hangs on the lane lines, runs, pushes, engages in horseplay, or enters either the diving well or baby pool during meets.
- FLIP TURN CAFÉ WORKERS, CANDY SALES & GRILLERS/WRAPPERS: Volunteers help set up and sell food and help with cooking on the grill. Sign Up Genius will be used to request donations to support the team.
- GENERAL VOLUNTEER: A general volunteer fills in where we need help during the meet. You could be assigned any job listed – candy sales, walker, clerk of course, etc.
- PARKING ATTENDANT: Set up fire lane cones before the meet. Keep our team members out of the lot to allow the visiting team parking spaces.
- TEAM CHAPERONE: Responsible for overseeing that all swimmers in the team area maintain good behavior – no running or horseplay and swimmers must be quiet for the start.
- WALKER: Also, referred to as “runners”, walkers walk disqualification cards and time cards to the tables.
